Verified Purchase. David Axelrod's shining moment. This album is one of the true lost gems of the s. It is a true psychedelic masterpiece! There was no one who could come close to this album. Sure there was Millenium and Sagitarius that are similar but this album is truly head and shoulders about them. This album is a must for any true fan of psychedelic music. The album is truly a masterpiece from beginning to end.
Do yourself a favor and pick up this gem while it is still available. I bought the vinyl version of this when it was first released you do the math. I used it to sell high end audio to those who were more interested in listening than physically Sympathy - David Axelrod - The Auction (Vinyl music; this was the first 'yes' in the process.
It quickly became my most often borrowed disc, I probably drove quite a few sales as well. This is still one of my favorites when I need to take 40 minutes off from the world. I am happy to see more of David's work finding its way onto digital media. It may not be uniformly great but it is all good. The aeroplane looked like Concorde, but the music -- I replayed it several times -- it was wow!
Different, experimental, big, cosmopolitan, chouette. So, I bought the song, and then the album. It's really good. Why, I wonder, had I never heard of this artist, before? He's been alive longer than my parents. Yet, from my earliest memories, I don't remember hearing any of the work product of David Axelrod. Really good stuff! I'm thankful to have found it! Excellent product and service. Not what I expected to hear. Sometimes I think I must have a tin-ear. I'll listen for the fourth time. Along with its counterpart "Songs of Experience" -both single, consecutive releases about William Blake's books of poems- "Songs of Innocence" represents, perhaps, the essence of Axelrod's daring and beautiful work.
Released inthis album reflects much of what was going on with music then, and probably represents one of its most interesting documents. Axelrod, still rather young was already at a creative peak: Jazz discovering Rock and willing to embrace it, orchestral arrangements that are bold and pushing the envelope of the traditional big band concept and -along with the addition of electric guitars- engage in full psychedelic flight without indulging in trippiness for trippiness' sake.
Where its succesor, Song of Experience, can be dark and ominous at times, something that would be even more pronounced in the albums that follow these, Songs of Innocence is hopeful, the wide-eyed wonder of someone wanting to tell you all the promise they see ahead. As you listen to it, you may find difficult not to be swept by this music and be impressed by its visionary power. Don't be surprised if you find sounds you might have credit other artists for, who only got there years later.
I recommend that you get both albums and listen to them in tandem. Of course begin here with " Innocence" -just like life does- and then move on to " David Axelrod was way ahead of his time when he recorded his solo debut in which even blew away what the Beatles were doing in the studio at the time except the great Axe remained under the radar.
He had an impeccable ear and with it a sense of production and composition rare in rock music more akin to jazz and classical music.
The most talented and skillful session LP of the time came aboard for his two companion piece albums which were both completely instrumental conceptual pieces based on the visionary and mystic Romantic poet William Blake. Fusing deep, thick, and soulful bass grooves and drum breaks with psychedelic atmospherics, acid rock guitar, and orchestral grandeur, David Axelrod created a masterwork that has been sampled countless times as the bedrock of ambient, electronic, and hip-hop music and is still being rediscovered today.

It sounds fantastic. There's less background hiss than Stateside's CD reissue and it loses the shrillness, making for a much more smoother overall sound and therefore an even more favourable listening experience.
Utilising the skills of the legendary Wrecking Crew alongside Axelrod's sweeping strings and brass arrangements, the interplay between Carol Kaye on bass and percussionist Earl Palmer is sublime as is the fuzzy lead guitar that drifts in and out of the mix. Housed in a cardboard sleeve, the 32 page booklet features extensive and interesting liner notes by Eothen Alapatt alongside archive photographs.
What an album superb psychedelic jazz fusion from what a year! Whether you are a fan of David Axelrod or inspired by the poetry of William Blake, this album is incredible. The album reflects the extent of electronic music at the time and the genius of Blake, moulded by the awesome talents of Axelrod.
I teach English Literature to "able and gifted" students who only really open their eyes to the talent of the poet when aided by the musical accompaniment of David Axelrod's interpretation. This is incredible and truly inspirational - thoroughly recommended. Report abuse Translate review to English. David Axelrod's masterpiece. His 'Songs Of Experience' album aside, this sounds like nothing else ever recorded and it's difficult to write a review because words almost fail me - the scope and styles of music fused together is breathtaking.
Already a respected in-house producer and arranger at Capitol records, this was Axelrod's first solo release and in the process he created a timeless genre all of his own - if hearing this album cold, it's impossible to put a date on this release. Chiming keyboards, soaring guitar solos, symphonic string arrangements, tight bass guitar lines and funky drum breaks - it's easy to understand why Axelrod's records Album) been cherry-picked for samples so often over the past two decades - virtually every song has a bass and drum break.
Psychedelia, symphonic rock, baroque pop, jazz, funk - it's all here and seamlessly fused together. And those beats Almost the twin of the aforementioned 'Songs Of Experience' they were both inspired by the works of William BlakeAlbum), this is the more upbeat, life affirming and optimistic of the two.
Clocking in at 27 minutes in length it's impossible not to listen to this album in full after the chimes of the opening 'Urizen' kick-in. What other items do customers buy after viewing this item? Earth Rot. Only 4 left in stock more on the way.

One of David Axelrod's oddest records, but still a darn great one! The whole album is sort of a concept album about slavery (hence the title ''The Auction''), and it has some spiritual political vocals on a number of tracks – but underneath is the usual great funky instrumentation of David Axelrod, with lots of nice deep grooves that kick the otherwise snoozy lyrics into another level.
