All the tunes are Wayne's, which speaks volumes as well, and if you are a Shorter fan you'll want to have this to hear these compositions "Seeds of Sin," "Scourn,""Fat Lady", "Peaches and Cream" and "That's Right".

This is from the vaults of Vee-Jay Records, who Wayne and Lee were signed with at the time, and they worked closely together in many contexts, not least of which was Blakey's Jazz Messengers. A good recording date that set the stage for greater work to come from all of the participants.

Hayes and Heath alternate, and do not appear on the same tracks, but the sleeve does not say who plays on what. It really was a band of young lions as everyone bar Strozier was at the start of a career leading to fame if not fortune. There are four Shorter originals, all attractive without being particularly memorable, one original by Morgan, and alternate takes of three of the Shorter numbers.

Morgan at this time was a dazzling new star. Here, he plays well, but without the edge of the seat excitement he could produce with The Jazz Messengers or for that matter on a large number of Blue Note discs. Shorter was a bit of a slow starter in his career and didn't really become a prominent figure until The Jazz Messengers became a sextet, a couple of years after this recording. Here, he plays with a slightly softer tone than he used later. Again, he plays well but without scaling the heights he did later.

The third Messenger, Bobby Timmons, also plays well, in a hard bop style, without any Peaches And Cream - Lee Morgan - Eight Classic Albums (CD) the soul licks he used with Cannonball.

The rhythm section do a professional job throughout, as befits their reputations. And that leaves Frank Strozier, at this stage a match for anybody in Peaches And Cream - Lee Morgan - Eight Classic Albums (CD) band, but whose career petered out into next to nothing for no reason I know.

He has a hard blown, clear sound on alto, plenty of imagination, and a natural feeling for the blues.

Apart from his quintet session with Booker Little, and 'Remember Me', an attractive session he did many years later, he appeared on very little else. The sessions he did with the MJ2 plus 3 seem to be only rarely available, which seems to typify his career. It's a good session although it probably would not be the first choice of recordings for Morgan or Shorter.

However, to set against that it is one of the very few recordings of a fine altoist who deserved a lot more publicity than he ever had. Come to that, there's not all that much Bobby Timmons around, as his career tragically disappeared into alcoholism. Everyone is on superb form with inventive solos and impressive group empathy on four memorable Shorter originals and one blues by Lee Morgan plus three alternative takes. It deserves a place in any jazz collection.

A firebrand trumpeter who recorded as a leader almost from the very start of his career, Lee Morgan is perhaps best known for his colorfully titled and roiling, go-go funk-inflected '60s Blue Note sessions The Sidewinder, The Rumproller, and The Gigolo. However, by the time those albums were released, Morgan had already delivered well over ten studio albums, not to mention his sideman dates. Shorter's tenor is up front, with Morgan on the second melody and Strozier following along for the tightly structured "Peaches & Cream," which is not a team effort until the very last note. Over 11 ½ minutes, "That's Right" proffers an easy, bluesy bar swing in a jam vehicle, with Timmons as pied piper, the horns shouting out in unison. Live at the Symphony Hall is a live album by the English rock band Magnum, released in by SPV.. The album was recorded on 19 April at Birmingham's Symphony Hall, and is the first live album by Magnum to feature Rick Benton on keyboards and Lee Morris on drums. 8. First, this CD is worth the liner notes alone-- written by Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, it is an articulate essay about this recording, "Suite Beat" -- performed by then "young lions" of the music in the early 60s, Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter, Frank Strozier, Bob Cranshaw, Bobby Timmons, Louis Hayes and /5(7).
