There were so many good songs, memorable songs, that didn't get their fair shot at top 40 radio back then. I was hooked, and I've bought every Killers release as well as both of Brandon Flowers' albums. They have some really great songs, but they are not, as a whole experience, his best albums. Brandon Flowers, thus far, is more like David Lee Roth, or Mark Knopfler--solid, but just missing what they had in their own respective bands.
So, here is Brandon Flowers' second solo album "The Desired Effect" which, right out of the gate, received critical accolades. I'm not so sure about that, as there are some songs here that begin to annoy after repeated listens. There was absolutely no reason to use Bronski Beat's gay independence anthem "Smalltown Boy" on a song like "I Can Change" which is the exact opposite of being who you are, and instead trying to be what you think someone else wants you to be.
Irritating, especially upon repeated listens. Next up on the annoyance scale is "Diggin' Up The Heart". At first, I thought why does this song sound so familiar, and then it came to me--it is a dead ringer for the Electric Light Orchestra's hit "Rock And Roll Is King".
Irritating upon repeated listens, too. These four tracks strike the range of emotions, are well written, and have the best melodies here. So, slightly more than half the songs here are strong, with about four that aren't. But, overall, I liked the album.
It grew on me. At first I wasn't sure, especially since I had just listened to all of The Killers and Brandon's solo debut. There is an element to Flowers that screams I want to be king of the world. I feel he tries to swing for home runs every time he makes music, and I still don't feel he's an entirely original artist.
He is still heavily copying what has come before without doing something new with it. I can't recommend producers because he's already worked with quite a few I would suggest. Time will tell if solo Flowers' material will hit the big time or not, but I guarantee that "The Desired Effect" isn't it. After a few weeks of being unwilling to Gerontacracy - Bored Cops - Bored Cops (Vinyl to anything else, I decided it was time to leave a review. This album.
It's just so hard to put into words how great it really is. But I'll try. I liked Flowers' first solo album okay but there were really only a couple songs I really loved. I hadn't always been a fan of the band and I didn't love most of their past releases but Battle Born really sort of woke me up to Flowers' amazing vocals and I started to truly appreciate his music style.
But when The Desired Effect was released, it was a game changer. I mentioned its release in passing to my husband who said, "Well, let me see if it's any good before you buy it.
My husband, not realizing I'd already purchased it, called me later and said, "This album is incredible. Buy it now! It's really sort of a strange phenomenon to me because I'm a gal who likes change, hates routine, and get's easily bored. But I think there are reasons this album may be something I'll never get tired of. First of all, Flowers' vocals are a breath of fresh air. He always belts out his music with passion, like a man who has experienced enough struggles in life to give him plenty to sing about, but always with an odd sense of guilelessness and innocence.
The Desired Effect is no exception and if anything, is even more powerful than his past work. Song after song delivers punch-in-the-gut lyrics and vocals that make you wonder what inspired such words, but they are sung in such a way that leave you feeling moved and almost guilty for listening- like you're peeking into someone's journal.
Second, Flowers' lyrics invoke stories. I am a story teller- a writer of fiction- and the entire time I listen to this album, I'm bombarded with ideas and images inspired by Flowers' incredible song writing abilities. He's a true artist with a flair for using words and music to not just entertain, but create vivid imagery. I was going to pick a couple songs to convey this but as I went through all the lyrics, I couldn't choose.
Besides, they mean something different to every person who listens to them. Still, the way he puts words together inspires and enthralls. Third, Flowers has a gift for making new, unique music with a definite nostaligic twist. Though his style is modern, you can always sense a vintage flair. I heard a lot of 80's in this album and I loved every second of it. Fourth, the music! Oh, the music! The song is put together so well I never skip over it. Finally, the spiritual undertones in this album seem to slip in and surprise me in the best way every time I listen.
I catch new traces of religion or spirituality every time I listen that seem to mean more and carry more weight than before. I know I sound like I'm gushing, but really I'm not. It's just that this album has honestly been the best I've listened to all year so far, and I've purchased quite a few. It's the first album in my life where I haven't thought any song was a mistake and I haven't skipped past a single track. Flowers has taken his music to a new level and I know both my husband and I will be listening to The aptly named Desired Effect for a long time.
The album itself is already a blast to This LP is amazing. The album itself is already a blast to listen to, Brandon Flowers being a top in my must listen to artist. But add that je ne sais quoi that is vinyl and you have a whole new experience. My new favorite thing to do is cook dinner in my undies so my clothes don't smell like burnt food, I'm an awful cook I am sure dinners would be better and boyfriends would stay longer if I turned off the music and learned to cook but who has time for that when Brandon Flowers is singing "Still Want You" from the living room??
Lord knows, I don't. Otherwise, shipping was timely. All was in good shape! Hey, maybe HSN has something to help with my cooking!
While I am a new fan of Brandon Flowers and was not familair with the Killers before now, this is one of the best new pop albums in ages. Gerontacracy - Bored Cops - Bored Cops (Vinyl high quality pop, memorable, lush, fun, addictive, powerful, with new anthems and soaring choruses that can shake mountains and swing from the rafters. The writing is superb and the music is full and vibrant. I suppose it does have an 80's vibe, but its so much better than that.
In a way I would compare it to a male version of Adele's last album, thats how good it is. So treat yourself to what I think is the best new album this year so far, because with every listen you will love it more and more. And thankfully almost all the songs here feel like they could be their own single, its not an album with just one or two singles and the rest fillers, its a hit from beginning to end.
See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. The second solo album from Brandon Flowers made in the downtime between "Battle Born" and "Wonderful Wonderful", this is a rich display of 10 songs, all of them catchy and fun and full of big sounds and enthusiasm.
Since Flowers had a hand in writing all of them, you get the feeling some could quite easily have crossed into The Killers, but being on his own allows him to shift tones a big and it's all the better for it.
If you're a fan of his band The Killers and are not of eclectic musical taste nothing wrong in that then this is probably not for you. Brandon clearly has some diversity in his musical repertoire.
Some really catchy tunes. My only complaint is. I wish there were more tracks and it lasted longer. One person found this helpful. To put it simply - I love this album, my favourite album of the year. I bought this album back in May but I'm only reviewing it now. When I bought it, it did not come out of the car stereo for months, it starts with a fanfare and it's totally justified. Purchased this as a gift for friends - I bought it as soon as it was released so I know it is brilliant, as Brandon always is either with The Killers or solo - after they came with me to their first Killers concert in Birmingham and loved them.
No problem with delivery - it came on the stated date. As a die hard Nas fan I was very disappointed in this album after a six year wait. I've heard that the backdrop to this album is Kanye West promising president Obama that he'd produce him. In terms of quality this album supports that statement as something put together to make good on a promise.
Nas sounds bored and the production sounds rushed and uninspired. I understand he's not Nastradamus anymore as he's older and his inception is deeper. I think Nas should throw his all into one last album and ride off into the sunset. He's got enough classics in his catalogue and has nothing left to prove. It's time for him to hang 'em up and be remembered for being one of the greatest ever!!!. It's a short album for Nas but he's a vet in the game so he's one of them mc's Gerontacracy - Bored Cops - Bored Cops (Vinyl gets a pass, album took a min for me to dig but after a couple of listens I was like aiight my g did his thing on it,i bought some more cd's with it so I had other flavor pumpin too and I don have the album next to me but the track I liked the most of course to me was cops shot the kid,i heard it before buying the album and was like gotta get it,i was raised in queens myself not queensbridge but this would've been pumpin out my speakers if I was back home when this dropped, theres mire hardbody joints on the album but cop jus to add to the collection, thats wussup,my opinion and by the way people still talking about it,i was in high school when him and J was going at it and I had numerous nas and jay-z cd's and mixtapes and my g Nas got J,we decided that way back in like '02,so long ago I can't even remember the date but thas final, old but my opinion I enjoyed the messages and most of the beats, but it needs to be remastered.
Some of the mixes seemed off, and Nas is a supreme MC. So, I know it wasn't really his fault. I doubt I will purchase anymore CDs. This one is shorter than Nas' previous. I purchased two Bose streaming speakers which were set up by Geek Squad recently. I hope to listen to Nas on the Bose devices whenever available, if not currently.
The first song on this CD is different but exceptionally good. The 4 stars are because of the short CD, not a reflection of the artist's work. One person found this helpful. A bit disappointed in this album. If we are comparing to the rest of hip hop eight now, then sure, it's a good ep. But from one of the greats, it's not his best work. Maybe should not have let Kanye West produce.
The music suck but NAS lyric are good as usual, Gerontacracy - Bored Cops - Bored Cops (Vinyl. As usual, Nas shows a dexterity and maturity in his Gerontacracy - Bored Cops - Bored Cops (Vinyl as Emcee Grandmaster. Many will again harp on the production. But, he says it right in his lyrics why we seek him.
