He can still sing really well, the same sparkle in his eye and same sensitivity in his body language. Good old Cat I say, he could really construct a good song - and those words, almost religious in a non pious way. Amazed to find how still so good his songs are. This cd contains some of them Remember singing it as a schoolchild, when I hated it.
Report abuse. A young man whirlwind romance with the early 70's, but more so music to listen, passionately, with your girlfriend! Ease of listening likens this great CD to the sublime sound of the Beatles, without losing its integral originality. If your heart belongs to the 60's and the 70's and you've never heard TATF buy it with anticipation as you will not be disappointed.
One person found this helpful. This release seems to me his most immaculate, most rounded record, each song a carefully written expression of joy, grief, hope The Wind is a brief, perfect opener - lovely, and a foretaste of the lyrical and musical delights to come.
It contains a favourite line of mine: "I never wanted water once Rubylove Album) duel bouzukis - Cat had a Greek father, after all - and a memorable vocal, one verse sung in Greek. None of the songs here or on any of his albums for that matter outstay their welcome. He not only had an urgency in his soulful baritone voice, but a welcome respect for brevity. If I Laugh is a song once heard never forgotten. My loss. That this career-best album should bow out with the great song Peace Train is almost too good to be true.
Talk about urgency - a great performance of a great song. Dolly Parton does a superb version on one of her live albums. By a whisker this is, to my mind, his very best set of songs. One of my favourite albums of all time, I think this is Cat Stevens best album, it certainly features some of his best and well known songs, including the 3 successful singles, morning has broken, moonshadow, and peace train, which we often identify him with.
The whole album also works as a whole. Plaintive and haunting love songs like how can i tell you and if i laugh are thrown into the mix with up tempo rockers like changes IV and bitterblue.
I would call Cat Stevens a musical magician for his musical mastery. He could never better this album. As characterises his early 70s outputs, many of the songs are littered with spiritual imagery, giving the sense that Cat Stevens was on a spiritual mission, which ultimately lead to him becoming religious. This is an album stuffed full of great tracks.
Highlights include well all of them! An incredibly eclectic and rewarding album to listen to. In my opinion one of the best albums of all time. I honestly couldnt rave about this enough, listen yourself and find out. I have had lots of Vinyl records from the 70's but I was missing this one on VInyl.
I have had the CD a long time, but wanted to have a set of the Vinyl in my collection. And the cover has a great image inside and the lyrics. There's a problem loading this menu right now. The album begins with "The Wind", a short song not even two minutes long featuring voice and acoustic guitar accompaniment in which "the wind" is associated with the soul of Stevens, describing the inspirations of his music. The song which best captures this duality of external philosophy and internal introspective is "Moonshadow", my personal favorite. What does "I'm being followed by a Moonshadow" mean, exactly. While there is certainly no definitive interpretation, I'll offer my best guess.
The Moonshadow could represent the ethereal intangible that is a part of life. A moon-shadow is of course ineffable and immaterial and yet it is real. Maybe the moon-shadow represents God, maybe the Spirit, maybe the Universe. In between the chorus, the song proposes a number of hypothetical scenarios as verses in which the singer loses body parts, always ending with a positive result, such as "If I ever lose my legs, I won't have to walk no more.
In a sense, the real "us" is deeper than our legs, our hands, our eyes, or our mouths. In sense, maybe the essence of us is like the Moonshadow, ineffable, intangible, but more real than even our physical bodies. Wakeman's classical style piano with lush strings and chorus accompaniment adds to the serenity of the music. While this song was certainly not original to Stevens, this arrangement and recording became a trademark Stevens hit.
The lyrics also speak of false preachers and prophets who reveal the supposed coming end of the world, hence the title "Who told tomorrow Tuesday's Dead", which could be interpreted to mean, the coming days are numbered or will not come to pass.
The album ends with another of Stevens' trademark songs, "Peace Train", which captures the spirit of the late 's and early 's. Young people during this period, unlike their Second World War parents, had advocated through music, art, literature and demonstrations the need for peace in the world.
This song is Stevens' literal statement about the same notion, imagining a "peace train" in which people will board, presumably with their minds and hearts to a paradisiacal time devoid of hate, exemplified by the line "Why must we go on hating, why can't we live in bliss? Aside from this controversy, Cat Stevens, who was now calling himself Yusuf Islam, left music for the most part to devote his life to other endeavors pertaining to his Islamic faith.
In recent years Yusuf Islam although I'll always think of him as Cat Stevens has returned to music and seems to have pulled away from his extremist views.
Regardless, this album stands on its own as a testament to the power of philosophy and introspection. While it's not clear if the year-old Cat Stevens who produced this album is really the same person as the year-old Yusuf Islam, the album itself transcends in its message even above that of the messenger itself. Given Stevens' return to music, it appears the older self is rekindling much about the younger, more ideal figure. Either way, "Teaser and the Firecat" is an absolute triumph of folk rock Album).
This is a great album by a great folksinger. Re-mastered, the songs Bitterblue and Moonshadow sound so clear and crisp. Cat Stevens has to be one of the greatest folk artists to emerge from the early '70's.
All the songs are mellow, relaxing, and thought provoking. His music brings me back to more carefree times.
I received my first stereo when I was 9 or 10 when my parents upgraded to a new one with dual cassette decks. I wore out the Cat Stevens 8 Track. A year ago I bought a turntable with cloth covered speakers and have been looking for this LP high and low.
Yesterday I got it in the mail: The gate-fold cover is clean with only very minor discoloring, as one would expect from an LP from The vinyl itself was exceptionally clean with only two minor scratches which in no way hampered the quality of the sound, hell, I've had brand new LP's that were dirtier than this one!
Cat Stevens - Teaser And The Firecat (CD LP came in a box that had Styrofoam above and below it as well as it being wrapped in a protective wrapper and was delivered during the window as stated.
It also came with a note from the owner, Wayne, which I appreciated as it added a personal touch to the purchase. Sometime after the "2nd Folk Revival was pioneered by The Weavers, Joan and Zimmy, and then Donovan and Joni further bent it into the musical revolution of the latter 60's, a burgeoning British pop performer with four hit singles and two albums one of them a top ten charter contracted tuberculosis and spent two years in hospital and convalescing, all the while contemplating life and spirit.
He studied meditation, metaphysics, yoga, and various religious holy books. This newly found spirituality led to a musical change in both lyrics and style for him and Cat Stevens, the new folk phenomenon of the 70's was born. Cat Stevens - Teaser And The Firecat (CD new introspective folk-rock style had mass appeal to the audience on both sides of the Atlantic and Cat Stevens had now established a signature sound.
Fans were not disappointed with this album at all. It sold itself to 2 on the album charts and attained gold status in less than three weeks.
It is still a highly praised favorite amongst fans and casual listeners, having sold multi-platinum since its initial release in October of ' The first thing you should know about this wonderfully polished diamond is that the original masters of this recording are analog two-track, made in a time when 8-track recording was already becoming archaic.
That may seem antiquated for a recording artist in a time of multi-track overdubbing, but once you listen to this, the fact is astounding. Cat and his 2nd co-lead guitarist best-friend-forever yes he still records with him to this day as YusufAlun Davies would record the song together, usually in one take of vocals and two guitars. The other musicians and backing vocals would lay down the second track either "live" simultaneously or immediately afterwards and with one quick mix, the recipe for beautiful recording was finished.
The layers and polish on these simple recordings leaves one amazed at both the talent and the engineering production that resulted in not only such clean and fine recordings, but in the simply astonishing talent of the players and especially Cat and Alun.
These songs for the most part were one or two take affairs and the level of production leaves one wondering how it was accomplished without at the very least 8-track dubbing.
One listen to this album as a whole and bearing the aforementioned facts in mind, and you will be sold on this musical genius. I will avoid any comments on Cat's conversion to Islam, his time in controversy over Salman Rushdie and the post probes into his personal life. These things are aspects of a performer under spotlight that, in my opinion, bear little impact on whether or not they are genuinely talented and genuinely serious.
Of course Cat Stevens was and is a serious thinker and philosopher in his music and that is as it should be with any artist. It is our responsibility only to accept their gift for what it is and what we do with that gift is our own affair. You cannot help but wonder both at the name of the album and cover art.
First, concerning the latter, Cat illustrated a number of his own album covers. He was originally pursuing a career as an artist when he began making music seriously as a performer, even considered becoming a cartoonist. He illustrated this album after a story he was developing for a children's book of the same name it would be published in with the same title as the album but has been long since out of print.
Teaser in top hat and his pet Firecat will attempt to put the moon back in the sky after it falls to earth. The music here is timeless, literally timeless. It is fresh, beautiful, introspective, brilliant, and layered with light servings of diverse strings and percussion. Every now and then Cat would offer up some sounds influenced by his Greek-Cypriot heritage on his father's side. Rubylove is just such a one of these treasures, featuring two each, bouzoukis and guitars for a beautifully layered cake of strings and Grecian verse in an Aegean dance.
Changes IV and Bitterblue also make terrific use of multiple guitar-string layers to Cat Stevens - Teaser And The Firecat (CD wonderful effect. Cat Stevens is another artist, like Joni Mitchell, who can take a sparse recording to gigantic heights. Of course we cannot fail to mention the pure fan-favorites of Tuesday's Dead, Moonshadow, and Peace Train. Here are the Moonshadows The Wind 2. Rubylove 3. If I Laugh 4. Changes IV 5.
How Can I Tell You 6. Tuesday's Dead [Side 2] 7. Morning Has Broken 8. Bitterblue 9. Moonshadow Disc 2 "Deluxe Extras" minutes 1. Moonshadow Live At The Troubadour 2. Rubylove Live At The Troubadour 3. The gatefold inner flaps have stills from the "Teaser" cartoon and live shots of Cat from the period while the beautifully rendered page long booklet reproduces reminiscences from producer Paul Samwell-Smith, guitarist Alun Davies and of course Cat Stevens himself - all nestled within lots of full colour stills from the Teaser animation film and lyrics to the songs.
The colour stills give it an almost childlike feel - very nicely done. This is a gorgeous sounding album on any format and one of the finest examples of singer-songwriter you can get your grubby mitts on. I listen to the wind Soothing music from a heart wanting to spread solace through song. The good news for rabid fans is that Disc 2 minutes has some genuinely stunning tracks on it actually worthy of the title 'bonus'. Stripped down and bare, the almost fully formed melodies come shining through.
The famously superb piano work by Rick Wakeman of Yes on the finished version of "Morning Has Broken" is replaced here with an acoustic guitar, which makes for a fascinating listen.
Better is the World-Music Meets-Acapella version of "Peace Train" fromwhich throws a new slant on an overly familiar song. Leaping and hopping on a moon shadow A rare treat.
A CD package which actually improves on the vinyl original! More artwork, revealing liner notes and some beautiful acoustic and live versions of tracks from the album.
The bonus disc has the feel of a group of friends round a late night campfire and with the original classic album makes a great package which I thoroughly recommend. This is one of my favourite albums of all time, but I always felt the original sound mix could have been clearer. This remastered version breathes new life into the song, allowing them to soar with greater clarity and detail. Simply joyous; thank you whoever oversaw this! I have a soft spot for this album as it was my introduction to Cat Stevens.
This deluxe edition has a bonus disc worth of material, some live. It's OK, but not necessary to have. Customers who bought this item also bought. Page 1 of 1 Start over Page 1 of 1.
